On Sunday, Libya’s national basketball team achieved a significant victory over Uganda with a score of 71-59 in their latest match. This propelled them closer to securing a spot in the prestigious 2025 AfroBasket Championship.

The game, which took place at the Mohamed Mzali Sports Hall in Monastir, marked the end of the first phase of the qualifying rounds, showcasing Libya’s dominance on the court.

The Libyan team set the pace early on, concluding the first quarter with a 21-16 lead and extending their advantage to 40-29 by halftime. Their consistent performance continued into the third quarter, leading 61-45, and ultimately wrapping up the match with a final score of 71-59.

This victory marked Libya’s second win in the qualifiers, rebounding from a narrow loss to Cape Verde in the second round. The team had previously secured a thrilling overtime win against Nigeria in the opening round, showcasing their resilience and competitive spirit.

With this win, Libya temporarily takes the lead in Group 2 with 5 points from three games, edging ahead of Cape Verde and Uganda, who have 4 points each. Nigeria trails at the bottom of the group with 2 points.

Libya now stands on the brink of qualifying for the AfroBasket 2025 finals, seeking to make a triumphant return to the tournament after a 15-year absence. Under the leadership of Coach Fouad abou Chakra, the team needs just one more victory in the second phase of the qualifiers, which begins in February 2025, to secure their place in the championship.

Libya’s successful advancement to the group stage of the AfroBasket qualifiers, at the expense of Morocco, highlights their potential and ambition in African basketball. The qualifiers, conducted over two phases, will see the top three teams from each of the five groups advance to the AfroBasket 2025, setting the stage for Libya’s possible resurgence in the continental basketball arena.
