Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio stated that “serious work to stop the war in Libya means the stability of the region and the security of our country, our coasts and our citizens”.

“The conflict in neighboring Libya also means an influx of migrants fleeing the war in search of shelter elsewhere.” Di Maio commented on Facebook, adding that “among these people who are fleeing, there are often terrorists as well”.

He revealed the details of his meeting on Wednesday with the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, and Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha.

He explained that they had presented him with a proposal to amend the 2017 memorandum on migration, in response to a request made by Italy.

This is in order to better protect human rights and regulate migration flows. “We are heading in the right direction,” Di Maio said.
