On Friday, Italian Minister of Defence Lorenzo Guerini stressed the necessity of maintaining Italy’s military presence in Libya.

Guerini claimed that external intervention has exacerbated tensions in Libya. He explained that diplomatic efforts are ongoing in an attempt to reach a ceasefire and avoid further fighting.

During a meeting with Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord Fayez Al-Sarraj on Wednesday, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio expressed his concerns regarding the military escalation around the city of Sirte in central Libya.

Di Maio emphasized the need to prevent a return to conflict that could potentially lead to a division of Libya.
