The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has emphasized the need for prioritizing reconstruction activities in the Derna region of eastern Libya, severely impacted by Mediterranean Storm Daniel.
Expressing condolences for the tragic losses incurred, UNSMIL advocates for rapid rebuilding efforts that cater specifically to the needs of the affected communities and individuals.
Highlighting the resilience of local communities in the aftermath, the mission encourages the creation of a national platform for coordinated reconstruction. This platform should ensure transparent fund management to facilitate long-term recovery and uphold accountability to the Libyan populace.
UNSMIL commits to supporting a recovery process that is inclusive and strengthens the resilience of communities, with a special focus on improving the livelihoods of those affected by the floods.
Following the storm, the United Nations, along with its partners, provided emergency assistance to 247,000 people in Derna and other impacted regions. As the initial humanitarian response phase concludes, UNSMIL remains dedicated to aiding Derna’s recovery efforts in collaboration with both local and international partners.
The disaster on September 10 led to extensive damage in eastern Libyan cities, including Derna, Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Al-Marj, and Sousse, with thousands of fatalities, injuries, and missing persons reported. Investigations by the Libyan Attorney General revealed significant negligence in dam maintenance in Derna, highlighting the lack of alarm systems, inadequate cleaning, and routine maintenance as contributing factors to the disaster’s severity.
