The acting U.N. envoy to Libya, Stephanie Williams, met on Saturday with the Head of the Presidential Council of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj, in Rome to discuss developments in Libya.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSML) said on its official Facebook page that Williams stressed the need to accelerate efforts to achieve a permanent ceasefire, and avoid further killing, destruction, and displacement in Libya.

Williams reviewed the mission’s efforts in the three military, security, and economic tracks to resume the political process as per the Berlin Conference and UN Security Council resolution (2510) to reach a comprehensive settlement and maintain sovereignty and unity of Libya.

Al-Sarraj also spoke with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte in Rome during a meeting in which the two officials reviewed cooperation and issues of mutual interest to both Italy and Libya, stressing that there is no military solution to the crisis.

Al-Sarraj and Conte both agreed that all Libyan parties should work on political negotiations to achieve stability as per the UN efforts and the Berlin Conference recommendations.
