Al-Ittihad SC has etched another chapter in its storied history by capturing the Libyan Super Cup for the 11th time, showcasing their prowess in a tense penalty shootout victory over Al-Ahli Tripoli. The much-anticipated final, held at Tripoli International Stadium, ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw in regulation time, setting the stage for a thrilling shootout conclusion.

The match’s intensity peaked when Al-Ittihad’s Saleh Al-Taher broke the deadlock with the first goal. However, Al-Ahli Tripoli responded with resilience, securing an equalizer in the 90th minute through a crucial penalty kick. The deadlock led to a penalty shootout, where Al-Ittihad ultimately clinched victory, underscoring their reputation as giants of Libyan football.

Al-Ittihad’s latest triumph solidifies their position as the undisputed kings of the Libyan Super Cup, having previously amassed 10 titles, with their last victory in 2010. This 2024 win adds the 11th trophy to their decorated history, reinforcing their dominance in the national football scene.

The final was notably conducted without fan attendance, emphasizing safety and sportsmanship, and was officiated by an international team of referees, incorporating the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the first time. This use of VAR underscores the commitment to fairness and accuracy in critical match decisions.

Al-Ittihad’s victory in the 2024 Libyan Super Cup not only highlights their enduring legacy in Libyan football but also signals the vibrant spirit of competition within the sport. As Al-Ittihad continues to set benchmarks in excellence, their triumph promises to inspire further growth and passion for football across Libya, heralding a promising future for the sport in the region.
