U.S. Opposes Foreign Intervention In Libya

In a phone call on ‘Al-Hadath’ television channel, U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Jonathan Cohen stressed that the United States opposed all types of foreign interference in Libya.

“We believe it is necessary to respect the ceasefire and the UN arms embargo. The Libyan parties must return to the political negotiations to reach a political solution to the crisis under the auspices of the United Nations,” he added.

The United States is actively participating in addressing the current crisis.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently discussed the Libyan crisis with their Egyptian counterparts.

“We will continue to participate by urging our Ambassador in Libya, who is communicating with all Libyan parties for consultations” Cohen said.

Cohen added, “We clearly support the United Nations Mission in Libya, which is now led by a former U.S. diplomat, so I believe our position on the Libyan issue is clear”.

This indicates the role of the United States is to participate in diplomatic talks as a first step.

He added that the U.S. adopted firm positions at the United Nations, in the 5+5 talks, and during the Berlin process.
