Germany Urges Resolution in Libya’s Central Bank Crisis

The German Special Envoy to Libya, Christian Buck, has expressed support for the mediation efforts led by the United Nations Mission in Libya to resolve the ongoing Central Bank crisis. Buck stated that the UN’s involvement sends a positive signal and emphasised the importance of all parties adhering to the agreed timeline for negotiations.

He urged all stakeholders to commit to a swift resolution to prevent further deterioration of Libya’s fragile situation. Buck’s call highlights the international community’s concern over the impact of the banking dispute on Libya’s already unstable political and economic landscape.

The envoy’s remarks come amid a prolonged standoff over leadership and governance issues within the Central Bank, which have fuelled broader economic instability in the country. The UN’s mediation is seen as a crucial step in bridging the divide and ensuring that Libya’s financial institutions can function effectively.

Buck reiterated Germany’s support for the UN-led process and called on Libyan factions to prioritise national interests over individual agendas. He warned that delays in reaching an agreement could exacerbate Libya’s challenges, including worsening the living conditions of its citizens.

The envoy also stressed the need for international partners to back the UN’s efforts and encourage Libyan leaders to take constructive steps towards a sustainable solution. Buck’s comments reflect broader concerns about the impact of Libya’s institutional deadlock on its path to recovery and stability.
