The Italian government confirmed its commitment to cooperate with Libya by increasing its military presence in the country.

Luigi Di Maio, Italy’s Foreign Minister, confirmed his government’s commitment to pressure the warring parties to reach a permanent ceasefire agreement. He noted that Italy is trying to reinforce their armed presence in Libya.

Di Maio said in press statements that the Italian army was already in Libya, through its Military Hospital in Misrata. The Italian Foreign Minister pointed out that the armed forces’ commitment to mine clearance in Libya was an essential step to enhance their presence in the country.

He also said that the continued operation of their Embassy in Tripoli was clear evidence of Rome’s support for the Government of National Accord (GNA). He added that the Embassy presence in Libya was to protect Italy’s geostrategic assets.
