Libya’s Supreme Tribal Council Welcomes Libyan Parliament’s Mandate To Egypt Over Military Intervention

On Tuesday, the Supreme Council of Sheikhs of Libya welcomed the House of Representatives’ (HoR) mandate requesting Egypt to intervene militarily in the Libyan conflict. This is in order to halt Turkey’s intervention in support of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA).

The Council’s Chairman, Sheikh Al-Senussi Al-Heliq, voiced support for the political initiative launched by Parliament Speaker Ageela Saleh to form a new Presidential Council comprised of a President and two Deputies to put an end to the Libyan conflict.

Al-Heliq added that the Council demanded the intervention by the Arab League, not only Egypt, to stop the Turkish intervention in Libya and the enforcement of the joint Arab defense initiative.

He claimed that the Libyan conflict was an issue of common concern for the entire Arab world. Al-Heliq pointed out that a Libyan tribal delegation, including 50 Sheikhs, will meet Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi on Thursday.

In a statement, the Libyan HoR has mandated the Egyptian armed forces to intervene to protect Libyan and Egyptian national security, if required. The Parliament’s announcement comes hours after Turkey threatened to launch a military operation against the cities of Sirte and Jufra.
