On Monday, the General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, held a high-level meeting with a US delegation led by Celeste A. Wallander, US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, accompanied by Lt. Gen. John Brennan, Deputy Commander of AFRICOM, and Jeremy Berndt, the US Chargé d’Affaires in Libya.

During the meeting, Haftar expressed his gratitude for the US’s efforts in supporting a resolution to the ongoing Libyan crisis. The discussions centered around enhancing security cooperation, particularly in supporting the LNA’s mission to combat terrorism, counter extremism, and address illegal migration across Libya’s borders.

Wallander commended Haftar and the Libyan National Army for their significant contributions to maintaining stability and promoting unity in Libya. She highlighted the importance of Libya’s security forces in ensuring the country’s protection against terrorism and external threats. The US delegation reaffirmed its commitment to helping Libya achieve peace and stability.

Both parties addressed the current situation in Libya, stressing the need for progress in the political process to create the conditions necessary for national elections. These elections are widely regarded as essential to restoring political legitimacy and national unity in the wake of the ongoing conflict.

The US delegation underscored the importance of all Libyan factions adhering to the political roadmap, which is designed to facilitate a peaceful transition. For these elections to be successful, security and stability must be in place, with the Libyan National Army playing a key role in ensuring a safe environment for voters.

Since the 2011 revolution that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has faced persistent instability, marked by internal divisions and external interference. The US, through its diplomatic and military arms, has been deeply involved in efforts to stabilize the country, including the training and support of Libyan forces to combat ISIS and other extremist groups.

The US delegation’s meeting with Haftar highlights the ongoing strategic partnership between the two nations, particularly in the areas of security and counter-terrorism. As Libya moves towards national elections, international cooperation, especially from the United States, will remain crucial in achieving lasting peace and stability.
