“We are working under the auspices of the Berlin Agreement, and Algeria is a party to it, to find a political solution to the Libyan crisis”, acting UN Special Envoy to Libya Stephanie Williams said on Monday.

William’s remarks came during press statements after meeting with Algerian President Abdel-Majid Taboun, where she praised the efforts made by Algeria towards a political solution to this crisis.

“Support from Algeria will allow us to reach a ceasefire and put an end to this protracted conflict”, she said.

The envoy expressed the interest of UN Secretary-General António Guterres regarding the situation in Libya and his demand for external powers to stop interfering in Libyan affairs.

Williams pointed out that the Libyan people have been suffering for the past nine years and that “It is time to find a real solution to this conflict and enable the Libyans to follow a political path through dialogue”.

She emphasized the need to put an end to the state of impunity that has allowed a number of countries to disregard the UN arms embargo, as well as impunity over reported human rights violations committed in Libya.
