Egypt Stresses Necessity of Ceasefire, Political Solution in Libya

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held telephone calls on Wednesday with his French and German counterparts, Jean-Yves Le Drian and Heiko Maas. He asserted the necessity of achieving a ceasefire and a political solution to the Libyan crisis.

A statement by Ahmed Hafez, the Ministry’s spokesman, reported that the Foreign Ministers discussed in great detail the recent developments in Libya.

They also underscored the importance of working towards achieving a political solution in the country.

Shoukry stressed Egypt’s priority was a ceasefire and for a political solution that would preserve the sovereignty and unity of Libya.

He added that the Cairo Declaration complemented the outputs of the Berlin Conference and addressed the crisis by eliminating extremist groups and armed militias, so that the “Libyan people may enjoy security and stability”.

The success in achieving the desired political solution required addressing the proliferation of extremist organizations and external interference.

These not only threatened Egyptian interests, but also affect the security of the Mediterranean, regional, and international stability.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi vowed last week that Cairo would not stand idly by in the face of direct threats to the national security of Egypt and Libya.
