The Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Libya’s outgoing Government of National Unity has announced the lifting of restrictions on Libyan-held funds in Malta.

This development was confirmed during a meeting between Acting Foreign Minister Taher Al-Baour and the Maltese Ambassador to Libya. The session also included the Chair of the Committee for Lifting Restrictions on Libyan Funds Abroad, committee members, and the Director of the European Affairs Department.

Following the discussions, it was revealed that restrictions on 1,800 accounts in the Bank of Valletta have been removed. Additionally, mechanisms have been established to begin the return of Libyan citizens’ funds deposited in Santa Bank.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pledged to issue official notices for affected Libyan citizens, outlining the necessary steps to retrieve their funds. The process will be coordinated with the Maltese Embassy in Libya to ensure a smooth and efficient resolution.

This marks a significant step towards addressing longstanding financial challenges faced by Libyan individuals and public companies with frozen assets abroad.
