Italian FM Stresses Need to Relaunch Libyan Political Dialogue

Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, discussed in a telephone call the situation in Libya and the eastern Mediterranean, with the EU’s High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell.

The Italian news agency ‘Nova’ quoted an Italian Foreign Ministry memo, with Di Maio stressing the need to relaunch the Libyan political dialogue within the framework of the Berlin Process. This is to reach an agreement as soon as possible for an effective and sustainable ceasefire, as well as a rapid resumption of oil production.

Regarding the eastern Mediterranean, Di Maio and Borrell agreed to maintain open dialogue with Turkey, to ease escalation in the region. The two sides also discussed the issue of illegal immigration, with a significant reference to Tunisia.

Since a meeting of world leaders was held in Berlin in January 2020 to draw up a Libyan peace plan, both sides in the civil war have rejected international appeals, and sought support for procuring further arms and mercenaries. In February, the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding the enforcement of the arms embargo on Libya as well as a ceasefire.
