On Wednesday, Acting US Ambassador to Libya, Jeremy Berndt, met with Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar, Chief of Staff of the Security Units of the Libyan National Army, in Benghazi, to discuss continued security cooperation between the United States and Libya.

Following the meeting, Berndt stated via the US Embassy’s official account on X that the United States remains committed to engaging with military officers across Libya and supporting Libyan-led efforts to unify the country’s divided military institutions.

He emphasized that a unified and professional security structure is essential for lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in Libya, underlining the importance of institutional cohesion to the country’s future.

The meeting comes amid renewed calls for progress on military unification efforts, which remain stalled due to the country’s ongoing political divisions and parallel military structures operating in the east and west. Despite these challenges, international stakeholders, including the United States, continue to advocate for inclusive national dialogue and military reform to build a single, accountable security apparatus under civilian leadership.

Berndt’s visit to Benghazi signals Washington’s intention to maintain balanced diplomatic engagement with all parties across Libya’s political and security spectrum. The United States has consistently supported a unified Libya and continues to prioritize stability, sovereignty, and the rule of law through both diplomatic and technical channels.
