SOHR: Turkey Hands over Drones and Advanced Weapons to Libya’s GNA

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) quoted Al-Arabiya sources as reporting that Turkey had supplied four drones and advanced weapons to the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA).

The sources claimed that a Turkish cargo plane left Al-Watiya base for Turkey after unloading its cargo. Turkish cargo planes usually unload mercenaries at Al-Watiya Air Base in western Libya.

The SOHR announced on Thursday that it monitored the arrival of a new batch of mercenaries in Libya as Ankara continues escalating its involvement in the Libyan conflict by supporting the Tripoli-based GNA. This is despite Turkey participating in and agreeing to the outputs of the Berlin Conference and the upholding of the UN arms embargo.

The new batch included nearly 300 fighters affiliated to the factions of Sultan Murad, Al-Hamza Division, and Sultan Suleiman Shah.

Observatory statistics reported that the number of recruits who have so far travelled to Libya has risen to around 17,300 people of Syrian citizenship, including 350 under the age of 18.

SOHR added that after their contracts ended, about six thousand mercenaries returned to Syria and were paid their financial dues.

Ankara has been accused by many Libyans of harbouring several fleeing Libyan extremists and of providing financial aid to brotherhood groups in the country.

Since January, Turkey has been transporting Syrian mercenaries into the North African state and has sent military officers and experts to command the operations rooms of the militias affiliated to the GNA.
