Libyan Parliament Denounces Statements made by Former UK Ambassador Peter Millett

On Thursday, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Libyan Parliament, headed by Youssef Al-Agouri, denounced statements made by former British Ambassador to Libya, Peter Millett. These statements made allegations, directed at Parliament Speaker, Ageela Saleh, and infringed on the Libyan state, as well as its elected sovereign bodies.

Millett is currently working as an advisor to Mustafa Sanallah, head of the National Oil Corporation, and Ali Mahmoud, head of the Libyan Investment Authority, part of the Government of National Accord (GNA).

In a letter sent to the current British Ambassador to Libya, Nicolas Hopton, Al-Agouri added that Millett’s statements constitute a blatant interference in Libyan affairs, and serve the political interests of those employing him.

According to the letter, the Committee said that Millett has been speaking this way for many years, without anyone from the UK’s Foreign Office stopping him.

He stressed that the UK has always had a solid policy in its respect for diplomatic norms, and its appreciation for domestic values, parliamentary work, and the will of the people. It added that it also respects the results of elections, and leaders of states.
