The Director-General of the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund, Belgassem Haftar, carried out a field visit on Friday to the Derna Valley watercourse project. The visit aimed to review progress on one of the key infrastructure projects supporting the wider reconstruction of Derna.
During the visit, Haftar inspected the work carried out by the implementing company and observed the most recent stages of progress on site. The project is considered central to efforts to restore Derna’s infrastructure after last year’s devastating floods, which highlighted the need for long-term water management solutions.
According to the Fund, the visit forms part of a broader strategy to follow up directly on ongoing projects. Haftar stressed the importance of adhering to the highest quality standards while ensuring that work is completed in line with approved plans and timelines. The Fund has underlined its commitment to strict monitoring and evaluation of all reconstruction projects to safeguard efficiency and transparency.
The Derna Valley project is a critical component of the strategic plan for rebuilding the city. It is designed to improve flood resilience, protect residential areas, and support urban development. By supervising projects closely, the Development and Reconstruction Fund aims to accelerate recovery efforts and provide the city with modern infrastructure capable of withstanding future environmental challenges.
The Fund reiterated that Derna’s reconstruction is a national priority and forms part of wider development initiatives across eastern Libya. With direct oversight from Belgassem Haftar and his team, the institution continues to coordinate with contractors, government bodies, and local authorities to ensure the successful delivery of projects that will shape Derna’s future.
