Libyan Prime Minister Dr. Osama Hammad met on Tuesday with Dr. Mohamed Faraj Madi, Director-General of the Benghazi Medical Center, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Benghazi to discuss ways to support the center and improve the country’s healthcare services.

The meeting reviewed the government’s ongoing efforts to renovate and modernize public and specialized hospitals under the supervision of the Reconstruction and Development Fund, with preparations underway to reopen facilities in line with World Health Organization (WHO) standards. The initiative aims to ease the pressure on patients and improve access to quality healthcare.

Prime Minister Hammad reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring suitable conditions for all health institutions, particularly the Benghazi Medical Center, which bears the largest share of providing medical services in Benghazi and its surrounding areas.

For his part, Dr. Madi expressed his appreciation for the Prime Minister’s continued support of the center, noting that this attention reflects the government’s broader vision to revitalize Libya’s health sector and enhance public health services for citizens.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.

The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.

The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.

Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
