Four foreign workers have died and eight others were injured after a fire broke out in their residential apartment in central Zliten, Libya, according to the Emergency Medicine and Support Center.
The center said it received an emergency phone call at 5:10 p.m. reporting a blaze inside a workers’ apartment in the city center. Two ambulances were immediately dispatched to the scene, where large crowds of citizens and foreign residents had gathered, while police patrols secured the area.
Preliminary information indicated that the fire erupted in a third-floor apartment. Emergency teams managed to evacuate eight people and transport them to hospital, where they received urgent medical care for severe smoke inhalation and related injuries.
Following a full search of the apartment by ambulance crews and police, four additional individuals were found inside. Medical examinations confirmed that they had died at the scene as a result of the fire and suffocation.
Authorities have not yet released details on the nationalities of the victims or the cause of the blaze. An investigation has been launched to determine how the fire started and whether safety regulations were violated in the workers’ accommodation.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by migrant and foreign workers living in densely populated housing, and the importance of enforcing fire safety standards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
