The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has continued distributing humanitarian assistance to refugee families in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi during the holy month of Ramadan, providing essential relief supplies to more than 2,000 Sudanese refugees.

The assistance programme aims to support vulnerable families who fled conflict in Sudan and are currently residing in Libya. The distribution included a range of basic household items intended to help refugees cope with daily living conditions.

The relief packages contained blankets, mattresses, tarpaulin sheets, kitchen sets, solar lamps and water containers. These items are designed to improve shelter conditions, ensure access to basic cooking equipment and provide lighting in areas with limited electricity.

The initiative forms part of UNHCR’s broader humanitarian response in Libya, where thousands of refugees and asylum seekers require ongoing assistance. Ramadan represents a particularly important time for humanitarian outreach, as many displaced families face additional challenges while fasting and observing the holy month.

The distributions are intended to ease some of the immediate pressures on refugee households while longer-term solutions are explored. Aid teams working in Benghazi coordinated the delivery and ensured that families most in need received the supplies.

UNHCR also expressed gratitude to its international donors and private sector partners who contributed funding and logistical support for the operation. Among the countries supporting the humanitarian response are Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, the European Union, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and the United States.

Humanitarian agencies say Libya remains an important transit and host country for migrants and refugees from several African nations. Aid organisations continue to call for sustained international support to address humanitarian needs and improve living conditions for displaced populations across the country.
