The United Nations Support Mission in Libya has called for stronger protection of the rights of women and girls in Libya and greater efforts to ensure their equal participation in public life.
The appeal was made to mark International Women’s Day, which is commemorated annually on 8 March. This year’s theme, “Rights, Equality and Empowerment for All Women and Girls,” highlights the importance of promoting gender equality and expanding opportunities for women worldwide.
In a statement released on the occasion, the UN mission stressed that the presence and participation of Libyan women are essential for supporting peacebuilding, development and long-term progress in the country. According to the mission, women’s involvement in political and social life plays a critical role in strengthening democratic institutions and inclusive governance.
UNSMIL noted that the results of Libya’s recent municipal council elections demonstrated the growing ability of women to assume leadership roles at different levels of local governance. The mission pointed out that two women were elected as mayors in the cities of Zliten and Suluq, reflecting increasing public confidence in women’s capacity to contribute to local administration and decision-making.
In addition, three women secured municipal council seats outside the quota system, a development that the UN mission described as an encouraging sign of progress in women’s political participation.
The mission also emphasised that expanding opportunities for women to reach leadership positions helps strengthen trust in their abilities and contributions. It urged Libyan authorities to support female leaders and highlight their achievements in public service and civic engagement.
At the same time, UNSMIL warned against intimidation and harassment targeting women, whether directly or through social media platforms. Such practices, it said, constitute violations of fundamental rights and hinder women’s participation in public life.
The UN mission further highlighted ongoing challenges facing Libyan women, including discrimination and limited access to resources and opportunities.
UNSMIL concluded by urging policymakers and society to remove barriers to women’s political, economic and civic participation to help build a more inclusive and stable future for Libya.
