Heavy armed clashes erupted overnight in the western Libyan city of Al Zawiya, heightening security tensions and forcing the closure of a key section of the coastal highway that connects several major cities in the region.

Local sources reported that the fighting broke out along Qanāʿa Street between armed groups led by Mohamed Bahroun, widely known by the nickname “Al-Far,” and fighters affiliated with Mahmoud Bin Rajab. The clashes involved heavy gunfire and armed vehicles moving through the area, creating a tense security situation and forcing residents to remain indoors.

Witnesses said the violence led to the temporary closure of the strategic coastal road passing through Al Zawiya, one of the most important transportation routes in western Libya. The road connects Tripoli with several cities along the Mediterranean coast and is frequently affected during security incidents in the area.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show intense exchanges of gunfire and armed convoys moving through parts of the city. Residents described the situation as chaotic, with sporadic shooting continuing for several hours during the night.

Reports also suggested that Mohamed Bahroun may have been seriously wounded during the confrontation. However, his exact condition and whereabouts remain unclear, fueling speculation and uncertainty in the city.

The clashes reportedly followed the killing of a local fighter affiliated with one of the armed factions operating in Al Zawiya, an incident that appears to have sparked the latest confrontation between the rival groups.

According to local reports, the victim was Abdelmalek Al-Bouseifi, also known as “Louka,” who was said to be linked to forces loyal to Mahmoud Bin Rajab. He reportedly died after being shot multiple times during the fighting.

Al Zawiya, located west of Tripoli, has long experienced recurring tensions between rival armed groups competing for influence and control over strategic areas, including routes linked to trade, fuel distribution, and coastal transport networks.
