Sudan Evacuates 160 Nationals from Libya

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday that it had evacuated 160 Sudanese citizens from Libya.

The Sudanese nationals have been evacuated from Libya thanks to close coordination between Sudan’s embassy in Tripoli and the International Organisation for Migration, the Foreign Ministry specified in a statement.

The Foreign Ministry added that it had evacuated more than 5,000 citizens from Libya on board of 13 flights, as part of its continuous effort to evacuate Sudanese nationals trapped in fighting zones in Tripoli.

The ministry pointed out that the last batch of Sudanese citizens arrived in Khartoum today after great efforts were made in organising this trip with the Supreme Committee for Health Emergencies, the Civil Aviation and the Federal Ministry of Health.

It is noteworthy that the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the International Organisation for Migration, has been organising evacuation trips for the Sudanese citizens from Libya since 1 June 2019.

Oil-rich Libya has been plunged into disorder when a NATO-backed uprising in 2011 toppled long-time dictator Moammar Gadhafi, who was later killed. The county has since split between rival east and west-based administrations and is currently witnessing a dramatic turn of events that underlines the urgent need to return to a full and inclusive political process.
