Libya has stepped up efforts to expand academic and scientific cooperation with African countries following a high-level meeting held in Benghazi, aimed at boosting research partnerships and student engagement across the continent.
The discussions took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in line with directives from Foreign Minister Mohamed Al-Hwaij, as part of a broader strategy to deepen Libya’s integration within Africa’s academic and research landscape.
The meeting brought together Ambassador Abdul Salam Al-Raqi’i, Director of African Affairs, and Dr. Tareq Najm from the International Cooperation Office at the University of Benghazi, alongside a number of specialists and officials. Participants explored practical mechanisms to support Libyan students and researchers, with a focus on increasing their participation in African and international scientific forums.
Expanding Research Collaboration
A key focus of the talks was enhancing research cooperation between Libyan universities and their counterparts across Africa. Officials discussed creating joint research initiatives, exchange programs, and collaborative academic platforms that would allow knowledge sharing and capacity building.
The participants also reviewed opportunities to strengthen institutional ties, particularly in fields aligned with development priorities such as technology, education, and innovation. These efforts are expected to improve the quality of research output and open new pathways for Libyan academics within the African scientific community.
Plans for Scientific Conference in Libya
Another major outcome of the meeting was the proposal to organize an international scientific conference inside Libya. The event would bring together researchers, academics, and experts from across Africa, offering a platform to exchange ideas, present research findings, and build long-term partnerships.
Such initiatives are seen as essential to revitalizing Libya’s academic sector and positioning the country as an active contributor to regional scientific development.
Boosting Libya’s Role in Africa
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants stressed the importance of sustained coordination and intensified joint efforts to support scientific research. They highlighted the need to strengthen Libya’s academic presence in Africa and enhance its role in regional knowledge networks.
The move reflects Libya’s growing focus on education diplomacy and scientific cooperation as tools to drive development, improve human capital, and reinforce its regional standing.
