The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has condemned the armed clashes that erupted in Sorman, west of Tripoli, warning that the violence caused deaths, injuries, and damage to civilian property.
The organisation said the fighting created fear among residents and threatened public safety, calling for urgent action to prevent further escalation. It also urged the authorities to open a transparent investigation into the incident and hold those responsible accountable.
According to local reports, the clashes involved armed groups inside the city and led to material damage in residential areas. The rights body warned that such incidents continue to expose civilians to serious danger and deepen instability in western Libya.
The institution called on security authorities to protect civilians, restore calm, and ensure that armed confrontations do not take place in populated areas. It said accountability is necessary to stop repeated violations and prevent a return to wider violence.
Sorman, located west of the capital, has seen periodic security tensions linked to the spread of armed formations and weak state control. Rights groups have repeatedly warned that civilians often pay the highest price when armed disputes move into residential neighbourhoods.
The latest violence comes amid wider concerns over security conditions in western Libya, where competing armed groups remain active despite repeated calls for disarmament, institutional reform, and the unification of security structures.
The National Institution for Human Rights said the protection of civilians must remain the top priority and urged all relevant bodies to respect human rights, the rule of law, and the principles of civilian safety during any security operation.
