UN Special Representative for Libya Hanna Serwaa Tetteh held talks in Paris with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot to discuss the latest political and security developments in Libya and efforts to revive the stalled political process.
During the meeting, Tetteh briefed the French minister on the outcomes of the recent Rome meeting dedicated to implementing Libya’s political roadmap. She highlighted the growing challenges facing the current process and warned that the existing approach may no longer be sufficient to overcome the prolonged political deadlock.
According to discussions during the meeting, the UN envoy raised the possibility of adopting an alternative political approach aimed at moving the process forward. She stressed that any new framework would require stronger and more direct backing from the UN Security Council to ensure effective implementation and broader international support.
The talks also addressed recent security developments, including the multinational “Flintlock” military exercise, which brought together forces from eastern and western Libya for joint training activities. Both sides viewed the exercise as a positive development that could contribute to confidence-building and improved security coordination between rival Libyan institutions.
French Foreign Minister Barrot reaffirmed France’s full support for the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and emphasized the importance of maintaining international engagement in support of stability and political reconciliation.
The French minister also agreed with Tetteh on the need for better coordination among international actors involved in the Libyan file. Both sides stressed that fragmented international initiatives have contributed to the continuation of political divisions and delayed progress toward a comprehensive settlement.
