At least 51 migrants are feared dead or missing after a boat carrying dozens of people toward Europe capsized off the coast of eastern Libya, marking the latest tragedy along one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.

According to the Abreen organization, which monitors migration movements in eastern Libya, the vessel sank on June 12 in the Mediterranean Sea north of the country’s eastern coastline. The group reported that only 10 people survived the incident, while 11 bodies have been recovered and 40 others remain missing.

The shipwreck occurred off eastern Libya, a region that has become a major departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe. Many of those making the journey are fleeing conflict, poverty, and economic hardship in Africa and the Middle East, often relying on human smuggling networks that transport migrants aboard overcrowded and unsafe vessels.

In the aftermath of the disaster, Libya’s coast guard and the Libyan Red Crescent launched recovery efforts near the eastern city of Tobruk. Authorities reported that several bodies washed ashore in the days following the accident, while search and recovery operations continued along parts of the coastline.

The latest incident highlights the persistent dangers of the Central Mediterranean route, which remains one of the busiest and most dangerous migration corridors in the world. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 800 migrants were reported dead or missing on the route between January and mid-May this year. More than 1,300 people lost their lives or disappeared in the same corridor during 2025.

Libya continues to serve as a key transit country for migrants seeking entry into Europe. Years of instability, porous borders, and the presence of smuggling networks have made the country a major hub for migration flows across the Mediterranean.

International organizations have repeatedly warned about the humanitarian consequences of irregular migration and the activities of criminal trafficking networks operating across North Africa. Human rights groups have also raised concerns about the conditions faced by migrants both during their journeys and after interception.
