Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar, met with the Head of Libya’s High Council of State (HCS), Khalid Al-Mishri. They discussed recent developments in the North African nation.

The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Turkish Defence Ministry. The two discussed ways of enhancing relations between the two friendly countries.

“Turkey will continue training and consulting with our Libyan brothers, in the military and security fields,” Akar said. He confirmed that Turkey will stand beside the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA), adding that Turkey will exert all efforts to achieve stability in the region. Akar also stressed Turkish support for an independent and sovereign Libya, with territorial integrity, and political unity.

In 2019, Turkey and the GNA signed a maritime border demarcation agreement. The eastern-based Interim Government, and a number of regional countries have denounced the agreement, considering it illegal.

On 11 September, Turkish naval forces conducted a search and rescue exercise, off the coast of Libya.
