On Sunday, the Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir said that there are plans to extend the Egyptian railway network to reach Sudan and Libya.

In press statements, Al-Wazir stated, “We are planning to construct the Marsa Matrouh railway – the port of Jarjoub…and the construction of the Marsa Matrouh-Siwa line and the extension of the Matrouh-Salloum line to the city of Benghazi in Libya.”

Al-Wazir affirmed that the railway is expected to connect the port of West Port Said to the port of Abu Qir in Alexandria via Damietta and New Mansoura.

He pointed out that the political leadership and the Egyptian government are paying unprecedented attention to the transport sector. He noted that the transport sector is the main artery on which economic and social development programs have been brought forward.

The minister explained that Egypt is currently implementing a comprehensive plan to develop and modernize the components of its transport system, including roads, bridges, railways, subways, electric traction, as well as seaports, river, land and dry ports, logistical centres, in addition to digital transformation projects in all related transport sectors.

He went on saying that their plan includes supporting all types of transportation industries, especially modern, advanced, and environmentally friendly ones.
