IOM Warns Migrants in Libyan Capital Face COVID-19 Outbreak

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said that the migrants in Tripoli face the threat of a COVID-19 outbreak.

“With the rapid increase of COVID-19 cases in Libya, it is critical to ensure migrants have access to accurate information on the pandemic,” the IOM said on Friday.

The UN-migration agency pointed out that two female community mobilizers in Tripoli are actively conducting the outreach campaigns with IOM medical teams. This is to inform the migrants of the precautionary measures needed and actions to take if family or friends have suspected symptoms.

The IOM noted that the outreach campaigns in Tripoli engaged over 2,200 migrants on COVID-19 information. It confirmed that some of the migrants are living in unsanitary conditions and congested accommodation, while suffering from poor access to water which increases the risk of a virus outbreak.

IOM added that it has provided life-saving information and hygiene kits to over 320 vulnerable migrants in the community settings of Tripoli. The awareness campaign was supported by the European Union Trust Fund, and the US Department of State, the IOM said.
