Martin Schirdewan, a member of the European Parliament, called on the European Union to apply greater pressure on Turkey in order to end its provocations in the eastern Mediterranean and northern Cyprus.

Schirdewan called on Germany, which presides over the current session of the EU, to work towards enforcing stricter measures that push Turkey to stop its “provocations and violations”.

He called for a stop to arms exports and an end to transferring funds for the pre-accession phase. “We are talking about financial and economic measures that could contribute to pushing Ankara to review its positions”, he clarified.

The European MP stressed the need to take an integrated approach of diplomatic, economic, and financial measures against Turkey.

On Thursday, European representatives will discuss Turkish actions in the eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus during a plenary session.
