On Tuesday, the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella said that Libya is a friendly country and was facing a multitude of crises. He stressed the need to provide the necessary assistance to it during the upcoming period.

In press statements, Mattarella added that supporting and stabilizing Libya is a priority for Italy. He warned of the impact of the Libyan crisis on the international community, and its cross-border threat to Rome. “The Libyan crisis is not only producing painful paths of grief and human suffering but is also a multiplier of cross-border threats, terrorism, and extremism.”

The Italian President stressed the need to “intervene to address the deep roots that feed these phenomena.” He called for increasing investments in the fields of education, health, and culture in the country. The President emphasized that this step must be in parallel with measures to combat illegal immigration.

Libya has been without strong central rule since Muammar Gaddafi was toppled in 2011. Rival camps have set up parallel administrations in the east and west of the country since 2014.
