On Wednesday, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres is reportedly considering the appointment of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jan Kubis as his special envoy to Libya, according to a source in the Security Council.

In an interview with the Russian ‘RIA Novosti’ news agency, the source said “the Secretary-General is considering Kubis as the UN special envoy to Libya, but he has not yet formally proposed it to the Security Council for approval.”

This position has remained vacant since March 2020, when the previous envoy Ghassan Salame announced his resignation for health reasons. Members of the Security Council were unable to reach an agreement on a candidate to assume this position.

In December, the Security Council approved the appointment of the UN Special Coordinator for Settlement in the Middle East, Nikolai Mladenov for the position. Mladenov declined the role “due to personal and family reasons.”
