Libyan health authorities announced on Thursday that the number of COVID-19 cases has increased exponentially in the country.

The National Center for Disease Control in Libya (NCDC) announced 764 new infections, 16 deaths, and 934 successful recoveries in the last 24 hours.

In a statement, the center added that Tripoli witnessed the largest number of new infections with 305 new cases, 735 recoveries, and 12 deaths.

It pointed out that the total number of people infected with the virus rose to 107,434 people, including 21,544 active cases, and 1,645 deaths.

On Thursday, Head of the NCDC Dr.Badr Al-Din Al-Najjar stated that the epidemiological situation in Libya is worsening due to COVID-19, confirming that the number of infections was increasing.

In a statement, Al-Najjar said that the daily tally of cases issued by the NCDC is not accurate, and does not represent the actual number of patients in the country.

He warned that the new mutations of the virus have aggravated the situation around the world, with an increase in deaths due to insufficient medical capacity to treat all patients. He explained that the rise in cases has led to severe overcrowding in Libya’s isolation centers.
