UNSMIL Opens Candidacy for New Libyan Prime Minister

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), announced the commencement of a one-week period for the submission of candidates for the upcoming three-member Presidency Council, and Prime Minister closing on 28 January.

This came following the decision of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) to adopt a selection mechanism for an interim executive authority on 19 January.

UNSMIL developed and released technical guidance and related forms for the submission of candidacies. This is in accordance with the eligibility criteria adopted by the LPDF’s mid-November meeting in Tunis. (check the announcement here: https://bit.ly/360gHnZ ).

UNSMIL clarified that a verification committee composed of three members of the LPDF, will be formed to verify the candidates. It will be tasked with compiling the final list of candidates for the Presidency Council for each region, and the post of Prime Minister.

Following the end of the nomination period, UNSMIL will convene the LPDF in Switzerland for the voting process from 1-5 February 2021. UNSMIL expresses its gratitude and appreciation to the Government of Switzerland for agreeing to host the forum.
