France Voices Support for Libyan Talks in Geneva

On Monday, the French Embassy in Libya expressed its full support for the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), which convened earlier today in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). It is due to select an Interim Executive Authority that will be tasked with leading Libya to national elections set for 24 December 2020.

“The time has come for change in favor of Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and prosperity,” the embassy tweeted today.

The 75 participants of the LPDF have until 5 February to select a prime minister and a three-member presidency council from a list of 45 candidates, UNSMIL said in a statement. The list of candidates include 21 names for the position of prime minister, and 24 for the presidency council.

The country is currently split between the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) and the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA). A fragile cease-fire agreed in Geneva last October has largely held, despite threats by both sides to resume military operations.
