The Italy Foreign Ministry announced that Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio discussed the latest developments in Libya with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu.
In a tweet, the Italy Foreign Ministry said that Di Maio exchanged views on the future of NATO, and the developments in the situation in Libya, on the sidelines of the NATO Ministerial Meeting.
Meanwhile, the Sixth Regional Forum of Foreign Ministers of the Union for the Mediterranean expressed their continued support for the political process in Libya.
In its statement, the Forum indicated that they support the Libyan-led and owned political process under the auspices of the United Nations, with the aim of achieving a political solution to the Libyan crisis, based on the roadmap.
It stressed the importance of holding Presidential and Parliamentary elections on time, the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, and the comprehensive Action Plan that requires the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya.
Last week, Italy Foreign Minister Di Maio and his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian confirmed that there is “close coordination” between Rome and Paris on Libya, and the Sahel region.
On Wednesday, the two FM’s met in Rome, on the sidelines of the signing of the “Quirinale Treaty,” which aims to enhance bilateral cooperation.
During the meeting, Di Maio stressed the importance of ensuring free and inclusive elections in Libya on 24 December. As well as ensuring the withdrawal of all mercenaries and foreign fighters from the country.
Notably, Libya’s elections are supposed to be held on 24 December, as part of last years UN-brokered peace deal.
Among the most prominent candidates for the Presidential elections are, Khalifa Haftar, Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, and Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, son of long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi.
