Head of the African Union’s (AU) High-Level Committee on Libya, Denis Sassou Nguesso said that the situation in Libya, and the postponement of the elections, once again raises the concerns for the African Union.
In press statements, Nguesso called for the need to find a consensus on a reliable timetable for the Presidential elections in Libya.
He stressed that holding comprehensive, free and fair elections is the solution to the current Libyan crisis.
Last month, the AU’s Commissioner for Political Affairs & Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye said that the AU expected the postponement of the elections.
In an exclusive interview with the Egyptian newspaper, Al-Shorouk on the sidelines of his visit to Cairo, Adeoye added, “we do not want to delay solutions either. We are working to support the establishment of peace and stability in Libya through the consensus of the main players within the Libyan scene.”
“We want Libya to return to a strong and stable country for the benefit of the African continent in general, and the North African region in particular, as well as the Sahel and Sahara regions,” he stated.
Adeoye affirmed the AU’s support to the Libyan people in moving towards democracy and stability, by organizing free and fair elections. He noted that the AU will work with the authorities such as the UN, in the context of relevant Security Council resolutions, to work towards achieving consensus among the Libyan parties.
He added that the AU will keep supporting the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya. As this would “have a positive effect in unifying the Libyans, and create an appropriate environment for all parties in providing stability and security.”
