On Friday, a Member of the Libyan Parliament, Saeed Imgheib stated that the Government of National Unity (GNU) led by Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba has expired. He added that the new government headed by Fathi Bashagha will take over government offices in the south of the country next week.
In statements to ‘Fawsel,’ Imgheib added that Dbaiba’s failure to cede power to the new government is not only a “call for division, but also a return to square one, and the cycle of violence and armed conflict.”
“We are in a sensitive stage and time, where we do not want foreign interference. The agreement took place with a pure Libyan will, but Dbaiba wants to implement the desires, ambitions, and agenda of countries,” he stressed.
The MP noted that Bashagha’s refusal “to be drawn into the war, and his desire to enter the capital by peaceful means, is a wise move. Therefore, the viewpoint of the international community and the countries interfering in the Libyan issue changed,” he said.
“We will see in the coming period the recognition of the government internationally. We are not interested in relying too much on international support for the executive authority. Foreign countries do not have the right to interfere in Libyan sovereignty, but rather we rely on the people and the local will,” Imgheib explained.
He stressed that the election date is reliant on the High National Elections Commission (HNEC). It had already declared a force majeure, and the obstacles in front of it.
He described Dbaiba’s quest to hold elections in June as, “an absurd step to prolong the political crisis.”
He pointed out that the Prime Minister’s office in the eastern region witnessed a smooth and peaceful handover of power. This took place between the Head of the eastern region’s office, Rida Afritis, and the Deputy Prime Minister, Ali Al-Qatrani.
Imgheib concluded his statement by saying the Deputy Prime Minister for the South, Salem Al-Zadma was among the attendees.
