On Tuesday, Libya’s Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Government of National Unity (GNU), Najla Al-Mangoush met with a delegation from the US Department of State. They discussed reopening the American Embassy in Tripoli.
The US delegation was led by US Under Secretary of State for Management Affairs, Ambassador John Bass, Special Envoy and Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland and Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security, Gentry Smith.
During the meeting, the delegation discussed the reopening of the US Embassy to start its work from the capital, Tripoli. They delivered a message to Al-Mangoush from US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken regarding strengthening and expanding bilateral relations.
The Minister appreciated this positive step, which was the result of joint efforts to facilitate the movement of citizens in both countries. She expressed the ministry’s full readiness to provide support to the American delegation for the success of its mission.
The delegation congratulated Al-Mangoush on being awarded the International Women of Courage Award 2022. They affirmed the United States’ support for the political process in Libya, and the strengthening of bilateral relations.
Earlier this week, Norland held a meeting with members of the High Council of State (HCS). They discussed efforts to establish a constitutional basis, and restore momentum for the Presidential and Parliamentary elections in Libya.
In a tweet, the US Embassy stated that they also spoke of the importance of the government’s ability to support the elections.
Norland also discussed finding a solution to the current political crisis. As well as expressed his satisfaction at the HCS’ appointment of its representatives to the constitutional dialogue committee.
