On Wednesday, the newly assigned Libyan Foreign Minister, Hafiz Gaddour offered his condolences to his Sudanese counterpart, Ali Al-Sadek. This is over the death of 23 Sudanese women, after their boat capsized in the Nile.
Gaddour said that Libya stood by Sudan during this tragic catastrophe. He also offered his condolences to the families of the victims and injured.
The Sudanese News Agency (SUNA) reported that 29 people were on board the boat, which capsized and sank on Friday in the southeastern state of Sennar. All passengers were women, except for the captain, who survived in addition to five female passengers.
The women were day labourers on farms, and were returning home when the incident occurred. SUNA said rescuers have so far recovered 13 bodies.
The Blue Nile is a vital transportation route for people and goods in Sudan. Such accidents are common, where safety measures are often ignored.
Last month, Gaddour took his constitutional oath before the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh.
The eastern-based Libyan Parliament has appointed a new government to replace the government of Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba. Despite the latter still refusing to cede power.
Recently, Vthe Chairman of Libya National Planning Council, Miftah Abdel-Wahed Al-Harir received Othman Mohamed Al-Bashir Mohamed the Sudanese Minister Plenipotentiary and Chargé d’Affairs at the Embassy of Sudan in Libya.
The meeting dealt with joint cooperation between the council and its counterparts in Sudan. They discussed activating the memorandum of joint cooperation between Libya and Sudan in the field of strategic planning.
The attendees discussed the exchange of experiences previously signed with the National Planning Council of Sudan. They also discussed opening the way for joint seminars and workshops.
