Police in Benghazi revealed that a Nigerian nanny beat a child to death after he broke her mobile phone. The nanny then attempted to fabricate the death of the child, claiming that he died after falling from the balcony.
The hospital reported the death of the child to Benghazi’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The body of the child was examined, and there were superficial injuries on his head, which showed that he was subjected to a fall from a high place.
The investigators summoned the child’s mother and interrogated her. The mother – also a Nigerian – reported that the nanny was taking care of the boy at that time. The mother added that she had received a call from the nanny’s neighbours, saying that she was severely beating the boy.
The mother confirmed that she would file a lawsuit against the nanny for murder.
The nanny admitted that she “accidentally” killed the child after her phone was cracked. She was referred to the Public Prosecution to complete the legal procedures against her.
The majority of African expatriates working in Libya do not have legal documents or work contracts. They enter the oil-rich country seeking a better life, despite the unstable security and political situation.
On Monday, the IOM announced in a statement that at least 1,042 migrants were rescued in the central Mediterranean, and returned to Libya last week.
“In the period of 11 – 17 December 2022, 1,042 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya,” the IOM tweeted.
It noted that a total of 23,596 migrants attempted to cross the Mediterranean to Europe in 2022. It added that 520 migrants died, and 844 went missing in the period from 1 January to 17 December 2022.
The IOM pointed out that 32,425 migrants disembarked on Libyan shores in 2021, while 662 died and 891 went missing.
