Former Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has publicly stated his belief that Abu Agila Masoud, a Libyan national accused of constructing the bomb that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988, is indeed responsible for the attack.

MacAskill, who previously authorized the compassionate release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi—the only individual convicted in connection with the bombing—asserted, “I have always believed he is the bomber.”

Masoud is scheduled to stand trial in the United States in May 2025, facing three charges related to the bombing, all of which he denies. The attack resulted in 270 fatalities, including 259 passengers and crew, along with 11 residents of Lockerbie.

The upcoming trial is anticipated to shed further light on the events surrounding the Lockerbie bombing. Scotland’s Lord Advocate, Dorothy Bain KC, has expressed that the proceedings will allow for a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances.

“The forthcoming trial in Washington will bring the opportunity for the full facts and circumstances of what happened to be fully understood,” he said.

The case continues to evoke strong emotions, particularly among the families of the victims, who have long sought closure and justice. As the trial approaches, it remains a focal point in the ongoing efforts to fully uncover the truth behind one of the UK’s deadliest terrorist attacks.
