Greek Diplomat Affirms Support for Libya’s Development Projects

The newly appointed Greek Consul in Benghazi, Athanasios Anastopoulos, has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and partnership with Libya during a meeting with the Chairman of the Benghazi Municipal Steering Council, Engineer Al-Saqr Imran Boujwary.

The meeting, held at the municipality’s headquarters, was attended by the Director of the Greek engineering consultancy firm LEAD, Kanaks Mandelos, council members Engineer Ahmed Faraj Al-Tayra, Abdelbaset Suleiman Al-Jazwi, and Radia Ayad Al-Mathbel, as well as the Director of the Projects Department and representatives from Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Boujwary welcomed the Greek diplomat and wished him success in his new post, emphasising the importance of enhancing coordination and cooperation between the two sides. He highlighted areas of mutual interest such as infrastructure development, urban reconstruction, and economic revitalisation — sectors in which Greece has expressed readiness to assist.

The council chairman also proposed the activation of cooperation and twinning programmes between Benghazi Municipality and Greek cities, aimed at exchanging technical expertise and promoting joint investment opportunities. He stressed that such initiatives could encourage business delegations, boost commercial relations, and support Libya’s reconstruction efforts.

For his part, Consul Anastopoulos expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed Greece’s keenness to continue working closely with Libyan authorities. He underlined that Athens views Benghazi as a vital partner for regional stability and economic collaboration in the eastern Mediterranean.

The meeting underscored the shared desire of both sides to deepen ties through practical projects and sustained diplomatic engagement, as Libya advances its reconstruction and recovery plans.
