Pipeline Fire Near Sharara Highlights Risks to Libya’s Oil Infrastructure

Firefighting teams in Libya are continuing efforts to contain a fire that broke out along an oil transport pipeline in the Hamada region, following a leak on a key export line.

The blaze erupted after a valve failure on the crude oil pipeline connected to the Sharara Oil Field, one of the country’s largest production sites. According to a statement from the National Oil Corporation, the incident occurred at kilometre 538 near the Bir Al-Marhan area.

Authorities said emergency, firefighting, safety and maintenance teams were quickly deployed to the site and are working to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading. The National Safety Authority confirmed that all necessary measures have been taken to secure the surrounding area.

No casualties have been reported, and officials reassured the public that the situation remains under control as response teams continue their operations.

The National Oil Corporation said production at the Sharara field has not been halted. Oil flows were gradually redirected through alternative routes to minimise disruption. Part of the output has been rerouted via the El Feel oil field pipeline to the Mellitah terminal, while another portion is being transferred through the Hamada pipeline to storage tanks in Zawiya.

The corporation added that its board remains in continuous session to monitor developments and oversee response efforts in real time. Investigations have also been launched to determine the cause of the leak.

The incident highlights ongoing infrastructure challenges facing Libya’s oil sector, where ageing pipelines and technical faults can pose operational risks.

Authorities expressed hope that firefighting teams will succeed in fully extinguishing the blaze without losses, as efforts continue to stabilise the situation and protect vital energy infrastructure.
