The head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Hanna Tetteh, has underscored the critical role of Libyan women in strengthening social cohesion and supporting long-term stability in the country.
Her remarks came during an event marking Libya’s National Women’s Day, where she met with a wide group of participants, including women involved in the structured political dialogue, civil society representatives, elected officials, and international partners. The gathering highlighted the expanding role of women in public life and national decision-making processes.
Tetteh praised the resilience and determination of Libyan women, noting that despite ongoing political, economic, and security challenges, they continue to contribute actively to building a more stable and inclusive society. She emphasized that women’s participation is not only important for representation but also essential for achieving meaningful progress in governance and reconciliation.
She stated that Libyan women remain a fundamental pillar in promoting unity and advancing peace, stressing that their involvement helps create a more balanced and fair society. Their engagement in dialogue initiatives and community leadership was described as a key factor in supporting national recovery efforts.
Tetteh also highlighted the importance of ensuring that women are fully included in political and institutional frameworks, calling for greater opportunities for their participation at all levels. She noted that empowering women contributes directly to stronger institutions and more sustainable development.
The UN envoy concluded by extending her recognition to women across Libya, encouraging continued efforts toward progress and inclusion. She emphasized that building a peaceful and prosperous future requires the full participation of all segments of society, with women playing a central role.
