On Wednesday, Director of Moral Guidance for the Libyan National Army (LNA), Major General Khaled Al-Mahjoub said the 5+5 Joint Military Committee (JMC) in Sirte will meet on Thursday to discuss reopening the coastal road, the exchange of POWs, and a number of security arrangements.

“The work of the committee is proceeding on the foundations that were agreed on before, and the meetings continue to overcome all obstacles,” Al-Mahjoub noted in a press statement.

He explained that the meeting will be followed by several discussions to take “decisive steps,” regarding the mechanisms for ensuring the withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya.

Notably, Minister of Defense of the Government of National Accord (GNA) Salah Al-Din Al-Namroush discussed with US Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland the progress being made on reopening the coastal road.

In October 2020, Libya’s rivals signed a ceasefire agreement, brokered by the UN in Geneva. It included a clause to reopen the coastal road linking the east and west of the country which has been closed for over a year.
