UN Secretary-General, António Guterres welcomed the endorsement of the Government of National Unity (GNU) by the Libyan Parliament as an important step towards “restoring unity, stability, security and prosperity in Libya,” the UN said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Parliament approved the GNU which is Headed by Prime Minister, Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba who will lead the country for a transitional period until general elections in December 2021.
The Secretary-General commended the Parliament and the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) for their efforts to advance the political process in Libya. He also saluted the 5+5 Joint Military Committee (JMC) and local authorities in Sirte for securing this important session.
The statement added that Guterres encouraged the new government to address the urgent needs of the Libyan people without delay, begin preparations for national elections on 24 December 2021, and continue to work towards the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
Guterres reiterated the support of the United Nations to the Libyan people in their efforts to advance peace and stability.
